One of the interesting things about baccarat is the way it is played out in the baccarat museum. Through the entire history of baccarat there were several different versions of the game. The one you will most likely see in your neighborhood town hall or casino is named “baccarat” by its current incarnation. It is played with a silver disc, called the baccarat crystal.

Most of the earliest versions of baccarat were played on wooden tables. These wooden baccarat tables were referred to as “siestas”. They were usually decorated with beautiful carvings and the lucky owner of the baccarat crystal would be rewarded with an excellent luck charm. Another variation of baccarat was played on colored cloth. Called “caranquette” this version of baccarat involved having an individual spill one glass of soda onto the cloth.

Throughout the 19th century the baccarat crystal became popular. Most of the early dealers were French plus they made a specialty not merely of baccarat glassworks, but also of stained glass works. Stained glass carvings and works of art became quite popular and they often graced the city halls of many of the major cities in France. Soon, the baccarat industry began to boom and other forms of glassworks and artists wanted to take advantage of this growing home based business.

In World War I a group of jewelers in the commune of Bordeaux decided that it would be fun to offer people who did not reside in Bordeaux, an opportunity to win a free baccarat game. Thus began the long history of baccarat, or simply “bacarat” since it was known in those times. The term for baccarat in France is “chaquet de cheval”, which literally means, “the overall game of cards”. This is the reason the word, “baccarat” actually means, “playing the cards”.

Baccarat started in Italy and is well known in that country, and is now widely available across the world. The origins of baccarat go back about 500 years. In the north-west part of the Italian countryside lived an unhealthy family named Boniface d’Amatrice. These families relied on being able to make their own wine and thus had a big card table. One night, as the bonifaces were relaxing at the card table they noticed another thing: a wealthy man was visiting from Milan.

The rich man was a devout Catholic and he often frequented the local baccarat shop in the evening. One night as he was leaving, the household ran into a rambunctious Baccarat dealer named Francois Barbet, who happened to stop by the commune in his car. When the people asked him where he originated from, he replied that he originated from the north-west and he enjoyed baccarat at the “chiocche”, or central table. As the boniface and everyone else left, the baccarat dealer took Barbet’s card and went house with a much larger profit than he expected.

Baccarat was soon popular throughout the Italian countryside, and several of its variations were brought to Italy by traders. Even though banker cards are almost the same, the jokers and another special cards have their very own rules. In the state version of baccarat, the ball player pays no attention to the cards that have recently been played; however, players tend to make reference to these as “cute cards” or “special cards”. While playing regularly, the general betting system works such as this: the player who has the highest total points at the end of all games is the winner, and the loser is forced to play baccarat with among their losing cards. The new comers to the game find the point values of the cards just a little confusing, and while many players stick with the original system of laying out the cards to be able (called “point scoring”), some choose to adapt an alternative system based on how each card is played.
